

Tobor Sconce
Development
Translating the initial concept into a functional sconce required resolving several technical challenges while maintaining the simplicity of the form. I tested multiple lighting configurations to determine which provided the best quality and distribution of light while integrating seamlessly into the compact body.
Several construction methods were explored for the brass body, including casting, bent sheet metal, and separate components assembled during installation. A brass sample was fabricated to test brazing the bent sheet metal components, allowing us to evaluate the quality and appearance of the joint before moving toward production.
Another key challenge was fitting the power supply within the sconce rather than inside the wall. I also explored integrating the hanging cleat directly into the bent sheet metal body, minimizing additional hardware and simplifying installation. Through CAD development, physical sampling, and lighting tests, I worked to resolve these requirements while preserving the clean, understated character of the original concept.

From Concept to Product Launch
The final sconce translates the original creative concept into a refined and fully integrated lighting product. Through iterative CAD development, material sampling, brazing tests, and lighting studies, I resolved the construction, mounting, and electrical requirements within the compact form. The result preserves the simplicity and character of the original concept while integrating the technical details needed to make the sconce functional, manufacturable, and easy to install.


The Brief
Develop a compact wall sconce from an initial concept provided by Roll & Hill’s Creative Director, translating the intended form and character into a functional, manufacturable lighting product.
The design centered around a simple circular geometry with a quiet mechanical quality. The challenge was to preserve the strength and simplicity of the original concept while resolving the technical requirements of a working sconce, including lighting performance, electrical components, mounting, assembly, and manufacturability.
My Role
As the industrial designer for Tobor, I was responsible for translating an initial concept from the Creative Director into a functional, production-ready lighting fixture. The project challenged me to preserve the simplicity and character of the original design while resolving the technical requirements of a working sconce.
My role involved developing the form in CAD, working through construction and assembly details, coordinating with engineering and manufacturing partners, and prototyping to identify and resolve design challenges. I focused on balancing the creative direction with lighting performance, electrical requirements, material considerations, and manufacturability, ultimately turning the initial concept into a finished product.
